We're taught to push harder, do more, try again. But what if the missing piece isn't effort — it's alignment?

In 15 years of coaching, I've worked with hundreds of people who were doing everything right on paper. The plans were in place. The goals were set. The effort was real. And yet — nothing was moving. Not because they weren't trying hard enough, but because they were trying in the wrong direction.

"You can row with all your might, but if the boat is pointing the wrong way, the effort only takes you further from shore."

The Myth of More Effort

Our culture is obsessed with action. We celebrate hustle, productivity, output. And there's nothing wrong with working hard — but hard work without alignment is like building a house on sand. It may look impressive for a while. But it won't hold.

Alignment isn't a soft, vague concept. It's a felt sense of rightness — of your values, your desires, your energy and your actions all pointing in the same direction. When you have it, things flow. Not without effort, but with a kind of ease that makes effort feel natural rather than forced.

What Misalignment Feels Like

Misalignment shows up as that persistent low-grade exhaustion, the sense of going through the motions, the Sunday evening dread even when your life looks fine from the outside. It shows up as the gap between who you are at your core and who you're being day to day.

Sometimes it's subtle — a quiet whisper that something isn't quite right. Sometimes it's louder: burnout, breakdown, the sudden inability to keep doing what you've always done. Either way, your system is asking you to pause, to check in, to realign before you take another step.

How to Find Your Alignment First

Before any goal-setting, before any action plan, I always ask my clients the same question: What do you actually want? Not what they think they should want. Not what sounds impressive or responsible. What they, deep down, genuinely want.

From that honest place, we start to build. And from that honest place, the action that follows has a completely different quality to it. It's purposeful. It's energising. It moves things.

"Aligned action is ten times more powerful than misaligned effort. Always."

If you've been pushing and pushing and not seeing the results you hoped for — I'd gently invite you to stop pushing for a moment. Not forever. Just long enough to ask: am I aligned? And if not, what would it take to get there first?

That's the question that changes everything.
